“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”
― Rumi
I think this quote speaks on a few different levels. Everybody at some point has wanted to be able to change the world. Even if it was when you were a little kid and you wanted to be a superhero who battles crime. That still would change the world, even if it is unrealistic.
Sometimes though, we lose sight of that because we are lost within ourselves so the changing of the world is put on hold. As we grow older though, we are made to focus other things. Other than the health of our planet and the overall health of society.
"Yesterday I was so clever", "Today I am wise", most people say that being wise comes with time, whether it's years, or in this case just a day. The person who said this is saying that yesterday they had the idea of changing the world, which needs to be done. But today, they are wise for wanting to change themselves.
We cannot promote change unless we are the version of who we want to be. Say you want to promote positivity, but you can't bring yourself to think positive thoughts. There is no way that you could help others unless you help yourself.
I know that it sounds selfish, but to help others you need to help yourself first. A shard of glass can't fix a cracked glass. So whenever you set out with the goal of serving others, remember that self care is important.
Change is often hard, but sometimes it is the only thing that we can do. Dropping an unhealthy habit, or even relationship can make you an entirely new relationship. In doing these things, you are trying to create a better life for yourself, which means that eventually, you'll be able to change the world. One step at a time.
